Nineteenth-century anarchism confronting religion

Anarchism, as a political and economic philosophy, in the 19th century addressed various issues related to the state, social organization, syndicalism, and labor movements. Among its central concerns were religion and the idea of God, understood as structures of power that shaped social life. During the second half of the 19th century, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Mikhail Bakunin developed a profound critique of belief systems and religious institutions, arguing that they were closely linked to political and social domination. This study examines their main reflections on the divine, exploring how these ideas became part of the development of historical anarchism and how 19th-century anarchists conceptualized the role of religion in a context of profound ideological and political transformations.
