Conditions of Phenomenological Appearing in Zubiri and Heidegger
Reality or Meaning
Keywords:
Zubiri, Heidegger, phenomenological appearing, reality, meaning, methodological divergenceAbstract
Zubiri and Heidegger begin their philosophical inquiries within the phenomenological tradition and share its main tenets. However, as their work progresses, they reach opposing positions, primarily regarding the conditions of phenomenological appearing—specifically, whether the primacy lies in meaning, as Heidegger asserts in Being and Time, or in reality, as Zubiri claims in Sentient Intelligence. This article seeks to identify the possible reasons behind these divergences. Our general hypothesis is that the differences between the two philosophers can be understood as methodological in nature. Consequently, we conduct a comparative analysis of their respective approaches to investigating the conditions of possibility for our primary access to the world. This analysis follows three methodological questions: (1) the choice of the starting point for inquiry; (2) the determination of the proper scope of philosophical investigation and its mode of access; and (3) the articulation and status of the dimensions that constitute our experience. Based on this analysis, we conclude that Heidegger's primacy of meaning is phenomenological-methodological rather than metaphysical, whereas Zubiri's primacy of reality is metaphysical in nature.
