Dialectical exercise and Development of Character in Plato's Theaetetus
Keywords:
Dialectics, moral character, pedagogical strategies, philosophy of educationAbstract
This paper adresses the intertwining of dialectics and moral development in the Platonic conception of education in the Theaetetus. After a brief exposition of the dialogue from the educational perspective, the pedagogical strategies that dialectics provides in the formation of character are presented, through the analysis of Socrates' efforts. Finally, the dispositions and habits of Theaetetus are examined, in contrast to those of Euthyphro. It is concluded that the dialectical exercise has a medial character in the formation of the emotional and moral character of the young Theaetetus.
