Since its Spanish foundation in 1534, Quito has played a prominent role within the imperial framework of the Hispanic Monarchy. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how, throughout the 16th Century, the City of Quito’s position and space became of vital importance to the political and symbolic structuring of the Spanish Empire in America. From this point onwards, we seek to reflect on the fundamental distinctions between the political and legal reality of the Kingdoms of the Indies and the erroneous merely extractivist concept behind the classification of colonies and their historiographic implications.References
